Breakdown Advice

If an emergency occurs forcing you to stop on a Motorway - Unless your vehicle simply will not move any further, you should:

• pull onto the hard shoulder in order to stop your vehicle. Ensure you pull up as far to the left as is possible,
• leave your sidelights on and use your hazard flashers.
  
• If it is possible any passengers including children should leave the vehicle and move away from the stationary unit, if you can it is advisable to move up the bank or behind the barrier at least. Understandably children will need to be kept under controll once out of the vehicle as this roadside is a very dangerous place.
• Always wear reflective jackets if you have any available to you at this time.
• Do not attempt to repair the vehicle at this point, instead once you have moved away from the vehicle use a mobile if you have one to call your breakdown insurer,
  if you don't have a mobile walk to an emergency telephone on your side of the carriageway (do not cross to the other side). These emergency phones are free.
  You should be able to describe where you are by looking at any 'driver location' signs you find on the road side.
  
  Should you be unable to move your vehicle onto the hard shoulder:
  

• Do not attempt to place any warning device on the carriageway.
  
• Hazard Warning Lights should be switched on.
  
• Leave your vehicle once you can ensure you can safely move clear of the carriageway.
  
  Should you be disabled or unable to leave your vehicle:
• Switch on your Hazard Warning lights
• Use your car phone or a mobile to contact the emergency services to tell them where abouts you are.
  
  Should you breakdown on any other type of road:
• If possible move your vehicle out of the way of other traffic, use your hazard warning lights.
• Wear a reflective jacket if you have one available.
• Judge whether it would be safe to place a warning triangle 50 yards from your vehicle in order to warn oncoming traffic.
• If you believe it is possible that you and your passengers are still at danger from traffic, get everyone out of the vehicle and a safe distance way.
• Judge whether you would be safe attempting to fix the vehicle at this point if you believe you or someone you know is capable of doing so.
• If you cannot fix your vehicle, then use a phone mobile or public to get assistance, ensure you can describe where you are.
• Do not forget to retrieve your warning triangle, once you do not require it's use.
