What type of car insurance is right for you? There are three different types of cover you can take out.
- Comprehensive Insurance
- Third Party Fire and Theft
- Third party only insurance
Comprehensive Cover
This sort of policy covers any damage to your car and any other car in an accident regardless of whose at fault. It covers your vehicle if it is stolen or if it is damaged by fire. It can very often also cover windscreens should they get damaged, personal belongings in the vehicle, car stereos etc. Should you be injured in an accident, if a claim is made against you following an accident then you are also covered by this type of policy. This type of comprehensive cover is going to be far more expensive than Third Party cover only but it can be worth that extra security. Basically no matter what you should be able to get help with Comprehensive Car Insurance.
Third-Party Fire and Theft Insurance
A step up from Third Party, this offers proptection for third parties, fire damage and also theft. Otherwise known as TPFT this type of insurance will not pay out for repair work carried out on your car should it be you who is at fault in an accident.
Third-Party Insurance
Third-party insurance is the cheapest and minimum cover needed to drive legally in Britain. It offers cover for you against claims or costs arising if you cause death or injury to someone, or damage to someone else's property. It is is advisable to take out a policy that offers you more protection than Third Party does if your vehicle is vital to your daily routine or is worth alot more to you.
The disadvantages of third party insurance are :
- If you were at fault in an acccident and you cannot claim from any others driver’s policy, then any damage to your car will have to be paid for by yourself.
- Some insurers will not offer this type of minimum insurance.
- Should your car be stolen or damaged by fire then you will not be able to make a claim as this sort of policy does not cover such events.
Car Insurance GroupsCars in lower insurance groups attract a lower premium, so it's worth understanding how insurance groups work. Members of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Lloyds Market Association (LMA) are the people who set the car insurance groups. |
