Pet Insurance
Pets are very precious to us and should they be ill or have an accident we want to make sure they get the treatment they require in order to recover. You should ensure your pet receives all the required vaccinations, as failure to comply with necessary preventative treatment can jeopardize your insurance cover and you will be left to foot the bills yourself. Vet bills as we all know can be hugely expensive. There are a lot of different types of pet insurance policies offering cover for different things.
Most provide some or all of the following:
- Veterinary Bills – if your pet is ill or has had an accident.
- Accidental– if your pet dies as a result of an accident.
- Legal Liability – If your pet injured someone or caused any damage to someone else’s property.
- Recovery costs- should you incur any cost in recovering your pet after it had gone missing.
- Loss – should you lose your pet.
- Travel Insurance – should you wish to travel abroad with your pet is it insured. You will find that preventative treatment such as vaccinations, spaying and castration will not be covered in your pet insurance policy. Should your pet become pregnant or ill prior to you taking out an insurance policy then you will not be covered for these eventualities. Often insurers will only insure your pet up to a certain age. Cover is often limited to 12 months of treatment for long term illnesses.
Consider when taking out Pet Insurance:
- What is the policy’s excess, what is the sum of money you will have to find yourself should you make a claim.
- What are the different levels of cover for different types of claims.
- What will the exclusions be on your policy, what you will not be able to claim for?
- Is there a set length of time that the policy needs to be running for before you can make a claim.
- Are there a maximum number of claims you can make on your policy.
- Is your pet only insured up to a certain age, can you get a better policy that will insure your pet for longer.
- How much will your policies cost, how can you pay for it, monthly or yearly.
Make sure you know what your pet is insured for and that you are happy with the level of cover your policy offers.
