The EC (European Commision) propose all new vehicle emission standards including those for vans.
The EC's proposed legislation would cap average CO2 emissions for vans and light trucks at 175 grammes of CO2 per kilometre by 2017 and aim to reach 147g CO2/km by 2020.
Heavier vans are allowed higher emissions than lighter vans and manufacturers will still be able to
make the heavier vehicles but on avarage 70% of a single manufacturers newly registered vans must comply with the Limit Value Curve set by legislation. The curve is set in such a way that a fleet average of 175 grams of CO2 per kilometre is achieved. If from 2014 a manufacturer exceeds their limit value then they will find they will have to pay an excess emissions premium for each van registered. The EC propose that the cost of 1g per km that the vehicle exceeds over the limit value will be £83.60 or 95 euros.
Legislation affects light duty vans and N1 vehicles, it includes vehicles used for carrying goods up to
3.5 tonnes and which weigh less than 2610kg empty.
